On Sunday we briefly dug into the ancient near eastern idea of covenants. I hope it was encouraging to look at just how simple, not easy, but simple the expectations are in this covenant, which began with Abram and extends to all who are in Christ. It boiled down to two things: go where God leads, and be a blessing wherever you find yourself. This morning I’m going to briefly consider one element of God’s invitation to Abram into a covenant that we didn’t dwell on, on Sunday. This is the Covenant Weekly for September 22, 2026.

In Genesis 12:4, we read this about Abram as he enters into this Covenant with Yawheh. “Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.” Did you get that! He was seventy-five. Now, we have indications that several people in that era lived longer than now, but they didn’t live that much longer. Abram was well past his prime when he first heard this call from God.

And all I want to park on this morning briefly is this reminder that it isn’t too late. Some of us think based on our age, our life experience, or our past poor decisions that God is basically done with us - or that there really isn’t anything fruitful for us to participate in. Abram’s age as he steps out in faith on this journey of following - going and being a blessing - is a reminder that it isn’t too late for any of us to start listening to God’s voice, start following God’s lead, and start sharing God’s blessing with others.

Where and how God leads someone who is in their 80s may look different than someone who is in their 20s. It may look different for someone who has had a hard and challenging life than someone who has lived a life of ease and affluence. But the invitation is just as real for each and every one of us.

  • Start listening to God’s voice. This can come through reading the Bible, the stirrings of God’s spirit in our hearts, through something we read, through a dream, or, perhaps most often, through the voice of friends and family who know us well. However it may come, be listening to hear God’s voice.
  • Start following where God leads. This may be to go in a certain direction in life, to head to a specific place, or maybe at this point it is only to leave something behind. However it looks for you, start following where God leads.
  • And finally, start being a blessing wherever you find yourself. Sometimes we can get so caught up on figuring out some specific will of God that we miss out on the fact that most of the time the will of God isn’t specific. It is general. God wants you to love. God wants you to be a blessing. This is God’s will for you on your journey. However the opportunities unfold for you, start being a blessing to others.

Whether you are 7 or 77, 9 or 99, I hope this is encouraging for you. It is not too late. Abram didn’t start listening and going until he was seventy five and we’re still talking about his journey today. You can say yes, go, and bless.
